The Haddon Township Hawks defeated the Bordentown Bulldogs (60lb division), 18-19, at the Bordentown Regional Middle School field today. It was a long defensive battle in the morning fog. By the time the sun came through, the Hawks had broken a final touchdown run and handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
The first half was dominated by defense. The Hawks demonstrated some outstanding tackling, while the Bulldogs gummed up the line of scrimmage with their linebackers. Zander Drummond led the Bulldogs defensive line from his spot on the left end, and Brandon Christian made several key tackles from his slot at middle linebacker. At the half, the score was tied, 6-6, with each team scoring a touchdown (and each team stuffed on the point after attempt).
Haddon Township struggled with their offense at times. Two offensive holding calls hampered their drives, and several penalties on defense helped the Bulldogs keep pace.
The second half continued the spectacular defensive showdown. Each side managed to score in the 3rd quarter, but the Hawks were able to convert a PAT and took the lead 12-13.
With time running out in the 4th, the Bulldogs began an epic 60 yard drive down the field. Brandon Christian and Noah Jackson broke some terrific off-tackle runs, often carrying 3 or 4 Hawks on their backs as they ran. Jackson eventually scored his third touchdown of the day, and the Bulldogs took the lead, 18-13.
The Hawks were now up against a determined Bulldog defense. But with time about to expire, they managed to find a hole and scored again on a long breakaway run, taking the lead for good, 18-19.
