Bordentown Falls to Lawnside, 12-6

"Any day you lose is not a good day," muttered a dejected Bulldogs fan as he left the field in the dying November sunlight. In what can be considered a Superbowl of the 60lb Division, the Bordentown Bulldogs came up short in the final game of the 2007 season, falling to the Lawnside Jaguars. The final score was 12-6.

Lawnside, athletic and speedy, scored twice in the first half on two breakaway runs. The Bulldogs responded with a score of their own when Jack Parker put his shoulder into a terrific 15-yard rush, running over Jaguar defenders into the end zone. The first half held all the scoring for the entire game. The balance of the game was defensive, smash-mouth football all the way until the final whistle.

The Bulldogs' Noah Jackson (No. 11) throws a completed pass to Jack Parker in the second half.

On offense, the Bulldogs' Noah Jackson pulled off one of the stellar runs of the year in the second half as he took the ball 50 yards after pushing through a nest of Jaguar arm-tackles at the line. He also completed his only pass of 5 yards to Jack Parker in the second half. Scot Soanes and DJ Parks solidified the left side of the Bulldogs offensive line. They both had a great outings, and helped the Bulldogs have a good day on the ground. Max Berton continues to improve at offensive tackle. Off the bench on defense, he also harried the Jaguars offensive line and filled in at middle linebacker when the situation required. Richard Reinhardt was solid at offensive tackle, helping to open big holes for the Bulldogs running backs all afternoon.

The left side of the Bulldogs offensive line -- Max Berton (No. 99), Scot Soanes (No. 17), DJ Parks (No. 26) and Ryan Hinkle (No. 82) -- get ready for the snap.

On defense, Joshua Neville literally stopped the Jaguars in their tracks at defensive nose tackle, leaving them no where to run but on sweeps to the outside. Andrew Leback contained the Jaguars from his spot at right defensive end. He was also in the Jaguar backfield several times throughout the game, causing havoc and contributing to several sacks. Ryan Hinkle and Kyle Kelly, two of the backbones of the Bulldog defense, had terrific days in the trenches, taking the fight to the larger Jaguar offensive line. Lucas Frader, Anthony Mayer and Alex Cook provided the Bulldogs with a tremendous boost in key defensive situations. The Bulldogs managed to turn the ball over on downs several times throughout the game. Michael Scaramuzzo and Brandon Christian where monsters at linebacker. The Jaguar running backs where fleet of foot, but they where contained down the stretch when it mattered most, giving the Bulldogs the window they needed to take a shot at the lead late in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs' Ethan Csenteri was not in uniform, and provided encouragement from the sidelines.

The Bulldogs' Michael Scaramuzzo (No. 8) receives instructions from the sidelines.

The second half was a battle. Each side bent, but never broke. The Bulldogs had their opportunities, and they had positioned themselves very well down the stretch to take the lead, but came up short on their last drive of the day. Penalties plagued both sides, but that was not the deciding factor. On a windy and clear November day, there was no single deciding factor as two talented teams clashed with each other on a patchy baseball-field-turned-gridiron while the fans chewed their fingernails on the sidelines.

The Bulldogs contested every down. They finished every tackle. Every one. They wound up with fewer points on the scoreboard, but they were not defeated.

Arguably, losing can be considered one of the best things for a team to go through, especially in the younger divisions. If you are not competing and losing, you are not improving your game or your character. And the Bulldogs continue to improve, even on this last day of the season, thanks to their effort in victory and to their determination in defeat. Despite the comment by the dejected Bulldogs fan, it really was a great day. And what's the best thing that happened today? The Bulldogs lost.

The Bulldogs finish the 2007 season with a record of 6-2.

I'm not sure if the tears in my eyes are because my son played in this game and had a great season or because my husband wrote a great article, either way I'm so proud of you both.

Love you.

This is for you Dave, you are the best, Great pics and great commentary, are you sure you didn't miss your calling as a photog/journalist? Way to make my girl Heath cry....Hey finally got my own dyson, it is pink and I am so proud of it because I don't have to ask to borrow yours, I am ACTUALLY USING IT, which is a shocker in and of itself, and because for every purchase 40 dollars go to Breast cancer research. So people, if you need a new vaccuum, they are at target for 399.00. Go buy one, and did i mention it is pink? Pink is my favorite color. Dave, great job on the team this year., max is just adorable in his little helmet and gear. Love ya guys.
